Overview
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) let F-1 students gain work experience directly related to their field of study. OPT offers up to 12 months of authorization, with a possible 24-month STEM extension for eligible students.

- STEM graduates eligible for the 24-month OPT extension
- Students whose employer is enrolled in E-Verify (for STEM OPT)
Key points
DSO recommendation
Your DSO must endorse your Form I-20 and update SEVIS.
Form I-765
OPT requires filing Form I-765 and receiving an EAD before working.
STEM extension
Eligible STEM graduates may extend OPT by 24 months.
